Somatic and Mindfulness Based Approaches

In my practice, I integrate somatic and mindfulness-based approaches to support clients in developing deeper self-awareness, emotional regulation, and resilience. Many of the challenges we face—whether related to trauma, anxiety, neurodivergence, or relationships—are not just experienced cognitively, but also stored and expressed in the body. These methods help clients gently tune into physical sensations, breath, and nervous system cues as a way to process and shift patterns that may feel stuck or overwhelming.

I incorporate techniques such as body scanning and interoceptive awareness, which help clients notice internal sensations like tightness, restlessness, or numbness to better understand their emotional states and needs. Grounding techniques, including orienting to the environment or connecting with the breath, offer tools to regulate during moments of anxiety or dissociation.

Breathwork is often used to calm or energize the nervous system, and when paired with attuned therapeutic presence, it can support powerful co-regulation and safety in the room.

Somatic trauma work may also involve practices like titration and pendulation, drawn from Somatic Experiencing, where we gently move in and out of difficult sensations to build tolerance and reduce overwhelm. Postural awareness and intentional movement are sometimes invited, helping clients explore how emotions live in the body and how physical shifts can bring emotional relief. Mindful visualization and resourcing techniques are also used to help clients connect with internal strengths, safe spaces, and soothing imagery—especially valuable in trauma recovery.

For those engaging in parts work, such as Internal Family Systems, we may explore where certain emotions or “parts” live in the body, helping bring compassion and integration to aspects of the self that have been holding pain, fear, or protection. These somatic and mindfulness-based methods are particularly powerful for those who feel disconnected from their bodies or overwhelmed by emotion. This work creates a foundation for deeper healing by helping clients move from survival mode into a greater sense of safety, connection, and choice.
